The Workshop of the Kunqu Society presents its Mid-Year Performance, played by the students, teachers and guest artist, Kunqu Master Meiti Yue.

Kunqu, proclaimed as a “Masterpiece of Oral & Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is a form of Chinese musical drama that combines opera, ballet, poetry and music. It also draws on earlier forms of Chinese theatrical performance: mime, farce, acrobatics, ballad recital, and medley, some of which go back to the 3rd Century BC.

To preserve and propagate this ancient yet vivid performing art, with donations of its members, friends and grants from NYSCA and NYDCA, the Kunqu Society hires Kunqu artists and musicians to teach Kunqu performing skills, including: singing, dance, acting, martial art, stage make-up and flute playing to art lovers from the Tri-State area. In addition to regular training programs, students are encouraged to present their newly acquired skills at the Workshop’s mid-year and end-of-year performances. Advanced students also participate in the Society’s lecture/demonstration activities.

Thank you for your time, and we would be delighted to have you attend as our guest.
