|
“Casting a Lance” is a scene from “A Plot of Manage-a-Trois” ---
The original drama was written by an anonymous author in Yuan
dynasty (1206-1341AD)
At the end of Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220AD), Dong Zhuo, a
mighty and ruthless general, seizes power from the emperor.
Worries about Dong’s threat to the throne, Wang Yun, the loyal
Prime Minister, catches Diao Chan, his beautiful adopted
daughter, praying to the moon goddess in the garden and finds
out that she too is worried about the chaotic state of the
country. Together they set up a “Plot of Manage-a-Trois” to turn
Lu Bu, a gallant warrior and Dong’s adopted son, against Dong
and to assassinate him.
Wang meets the father and son on two separate occasions He first
promises to marry his daughter Diao Chan to Lu Bu --- whom he
praises as the Greatest Hero of the nation, on the 15th day of
the month. A few days later, he meets Dong Zhuo and promises to
send Diao Chan to his residence on the 15th day of the month. He
then persuades Dong Zhuo to assign Lu Bu to Tiger Fortress to
fight against a powerful enemy battalion two days prior to the
wedding day. After the victorious Lu Bu returning to the capital
and finds out that his beloved Diao Chan is now his father’s new
concubine, driving by uncontrollable rage, he challenges his
father’s authority and vows to win Diao Chan back. Thus, the
father and son become enemies. Before long, Lu Bu kills Dong
Zhuo, but soon he himself is killed by other warlords. As for
Diao Chan, after saving her country with this “Plot of
Manage-a-Trois,” she bids farewell to her adopted father and
resides in a nunnery for the rest of her life.
Casting a Lance is a selected scene of the First Act. Holding a
lance on one hand, Lu Bu sings and dances on his way to pay a
secret visit to Diao Chan. |
