Journey to the West : The Reunion
|
|
|
“The Reunion” is a scene from the famous Yuan (1280-1368) drama,
“Journey to the West,” which tells the fascinating journey that
Xuanzhuang, a young Buddhist monk of the Tang dynasty (618-907),
takes to India to study the Buddhist sutras and bring the
scriptures back to Chang An, then capital of China. On his way,
Xuanzhuang and his three disciples, all inspired souls, must
endure all sorts of hardship and survive numerous attacks from
demons and other evil spirits, before they obtain enlightenment.
“The Reunion” tells the personal story of Xuanzhuang, the monk.
The scene opens with his mother, Yinshi, reminiscing the tragic
moments 18 years ago when her husband Chen Guangrui was murdered
by a pirate and how she was forced to throw her newborn son
Jiangliu'er into the river. Then, when Xuanzhuang appears at her
door front, she is surprised by the resemblance between the monk
and her deceased husband. After exchanging a few words, she is
shocked to realize that the young monk is none other than her
long lost son, The scene closes with the elated mother and son
tearfully celebrating their reunion, and then deciding to
revenge the murder of Xuanzhuang's father.
"The Reunion" is the only remaining piece in the Kunqu Theater
that has preserved all the original dramatic components of the
Yuan drama: its music arrangement, libretto as well as all the
physical stage movements -- uniquely different from other plays
in the Kunqu repertoires. |

Journey to the West : Monkey King and the Magic Fan
|
|
Just as Superman and Batman are the American super heroes,
Monkey King is the most popular super hero in Chinese mythology.
Unlike the American heroes, Monkey King is not a human being but
a monkey, so he is very naughty and playful. A superb master of
martial arts and poses magical powers, he serves as a guarding
angel and a faithful disciple to a Buddhist monk on his journey
to India in search for the authentic scriptures. |
