The Phenix Mountain : Princess Floret Bestowing a Sword

“Princess Floret” is a highlight scene from the Kunqu classic “The Phoenix Mountain,” a tragedy of two flower-like young lovers, separated and finally sacrificed by conflict political interests and conspiracy. The story takes place during the time of King Cheng Zong of the Yuan Dynasty (1294-1307). Princely Hai, a spy sent by the Prime Minister to gather military information from the rebellious Prince Anxi, a brother of King Cheng Zong. A winner with the highest honor of a military skill contest, Princely Hai is appointed as the new Secretary of Defense by Prince Anxi. Chamberlain Trumpet, who is bitterly envious and suspicious , invited Hai to a party and coerces Hai into drinking so much wine that Hai slips into an alcoholic stupor.

The play begins with Trumpet and his men taking the intoxicated Princely Hai into the quarters of Princess Floret, daughter of Prince Anxi, who is out to a party. Trumpet and his men promptly take off as soon as they have left Princely Hai there. A few moments later, when Princess Floret’s maid, Greenery, finds Princely, her anger is quickly replaced by shock, for the young man who has mysteriously and boldly sneaked into Princess Floret’s quarters is none other than her long-parted elder brother! As Greenery is trying to take Princely out of there, Princess Floret is back. One thing leading to the other, Princess comes face to face with the young man who has committed the unpardonable crime of sneaking into her quarters. The punishment of such a crime is death!

Fortunately, Princely Hai is saved by his earnestness and, more important, his extreme good looks, which means love at first sight for Princess Floret and him. Her forgiveness of him is soon followed by romantic overtures and flirtation. The play ends with our princely hero engaged to the lovely, flower-like princess. Holding a sword that Princess Floret gave him as a proof of their love, Hai bid farewell to Floret and his sister.
