Borrowing the Fan
|
Borrowing the Fan This mythical
tale is adapted from one if China’s four celebrated epic tales, Journey
to the West, written by Wu Chengen. During the Tang dynasty (618-907),
the Buddhist monk Tripitaka and his four disciples travel to the west.
While traveling, their path is blocked by a flaming mountain. Wukong, the
Monkey King, visits his sister-in-law, Princess Iron Fan, to borrow her
magic fan to disperse the flaming mountain. The Princess holds a grudge
for a past wrong and refused to give him the fan. The two engage in a battle
of magic, which Wukong wins. The Princess retreats to her entered his sister-in-law’s
stomach. He kicks and turns inside her, making her sick, and she finally
agrees to lend him the magic fan. But the Princess gives him a fake fan
and Wukong, upon learning of her trick, pleads with her one last time.
Finally Princess Iron Fan, moved by Wukong’s sincerity, lends him the real
fan. The flaming mountain is dispersed and the group continues its journey.
